Thai Permanent Residency Categories

There are 5 different criterias to make you eligible in applying for a Thai permanent residency:

  1. Investment
  2. Employment
  3. Humanitarian purposes (6 sub-types):
    1. Spouse with Thai citizenship
    2. Spouse with Thai permanent residency
    3. Child adopted by parents who are Thai citizens
    4. Child adopted by parents who are Thai permanent residents
    5. Parents adopting a child who is a Thai citizen
    6. Parents adopting a child is who a Thai resident
  4. Becoming a global talented expert
  5. Case-by-case circumstances

Points for Consideration

  1. A child must be under the age of 20 and unmarried.
  2. Humanitarian purposes require a Thai citizen or a Thai permanent resident to state their intention to patronize the permanent residency of a foreign applicant.
  3. A spouse must have either an investment-type or an employment-type permanent residency the same as the foreign applicant.
  4. Investment-type permanent residency requires the individual to report with the Immigration Division in September of each year for 3 years consecutively starting from the date of granting the permanent residency.

Thai Permanent Residency through Investment

The following are conditions where Thai permanent residency can be granted to certain individuals through investment: 

  1. Possess a sum of money no less than 10 million THB with proof of an overseas transfer into Thailand certified by a commercial bank in Thailand.
  2. The purpose of investment is to benefit the Thai economy per the following conditions:
    1. Investing in a limited company or a public company, to be witnessed  by the competent official as evidence.
      1. A limited company is under the regulation of the Department of Business Development.
      2. A public company is under the regulation of the Ministry of Commerce.
    2. Buying government or state enterprise bonds guaranteed by the Ministry of Finance or the Bank of Thailand and providing proof of ownership.
    3. Investing in the stock market with permission from the Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Thai Permanent Residency through Employment

The following are conditions where Thai permanent residency can be granted to certain individuals through employment:

  1. Working as a CEO or President of a Thailand-registered company with a registered capital up to at least 10 million THB.
    1. Have the authority to sign on the company’s behalf for not less than 1 year until the date of submitting the application.
    2. Annual average salary is at least 50,000 THB or higher for 2 years consecutively, with tax receipts until the time of submitting the application.
  2. Have business purposes are beneficial to the Thai economy through:
    1. International trade
      1. An annual turnover must not be less than 20 million THB in the past 3 years, as evidenced by a commercial bank.
      2. An accumulated turnover must not be less than 100 million THB in the past 3 years, as evidenced by a loan company.
    2. Tourism
      1. A company bringing up to at least 5,000 tourists with the business performance in the past 3 years, as witnessed by the competent official as evidence (Tourism Authority of Thailand).
    3. Other businesses
      1. A foreigner must be a fully-paid shareholder of the company with an investment no less than 5 million THB for at least 2 years until the time of submitting the application.

Humanitarian Purposes (Spouse with Thai Citizen)

The following are conditions where Thai permanent residency can be granted to certain individuals through humanitarian purposes:

  1. Employment in Thailand
    1. A marriage is registered in Thailand for 2 years or more during the time of submitting the application.
    2. A child is conceived, and:
      1. In case of the inability to conceive a child, the applicant must present a medical certificate from the hospital to prove their inability.
      2. In case of the inability to conceive a child without being able to obtain a medical certificate, the couple must register their marriage in Thailand for at least 5 years.
    3. Either or both spouses must have a minimum income at least 30,000 THB for 2 consecutive years until the time of submitting the application, supported by proof of taxation.
  2. Senior Status
    1. A foreigner must be at least 50 years old at the time of submitting the application.
    2. Be a registered spouse for at least 2 years until the date of application.
    3. Have a monthly income of up to 65,000 THB or higher for at least 2 consecutive years until the time of application.

Humanitarian Purposes (Spouse with Thai Permanent Residency)

  1. Spouses have their marriage registered for at least 2 years until the application date.
  2. A spouse with existing Thai permanent residency must state an intention to patronize the applicant.
  3. An adopter must meet the same criteria as the applicant for investment or employment categories.

Humanitarian Purposes (Child Patronized by Thai-Citizen Parents)

There are 2 options for consideration:

  1. Child is adopted by parents with Thai citizenship by the following cases:
  2. The child is full-blooded.
  3. Parents (mother or father) must be at least 50 years during the application time.
  4. Sponsor must have a monthly income of at least 30,000 THB in 2 consecutive years with proof of taxation.
  5. Child requesting to be adopted by parents with Thai citizenship must meet these conditions:
    1. Parents (mother or father) must be blood-related to the child with the adoption registration certified.
    2. A unmarried child is under the age of 20, and:
      1. If the child is 20 years or older by the date of application, the parents must present proof of adoption. For example, evidence of ongoing undergraduate studies before the age of 20 or a medical certificate indicating the inability to take care by oneself issued by the hospital.
    3. Adopter has a monthly income of at least 30,000 THB for 2 consecutive years with proof of taxation.

Humanitarian Purposes (Child Patronized by Thai Permanent Resident Parents)

There are 2 options:

  1. The child patronized by parents with permanent residency must be:
    1. Full-blooded.
    2. Parents (mother or father) must be at least 50 years during the application time, and
  2. The child requesting to be patronized by parents with permanent residency must meet these conditions:
    1. The child is full-blooded.
    2. Is unmarried and under the age of 20, and:
      1. If the child is 20 years or older by the date of application, the parents must present proof of adoption. For example, evidence of ongoing undergraduate studies before the age of 20 or a medical certificate indicating the inability to take care by oneself issued by the hospital.

Humanitarian Purposes (Parents Patronizing a Thai Citizen Child)

There are 2 options:

  1. Parents patronizing a Thai-citizen child must meet the following criteria:
    1. Parents (mother or father) must be blood-related to the child and have a registered birth.
    2. A child is unmarried.
    3. A child is under the age of 20, and:
      1. If the child is 20 years or older by the date of application, the parents must present proof of adoption. For example, evidence of ongoing undergraduate studies before the age of 20 or a medical certificate indicating the inability to take care by oneself issued by the hospital.
    4. Adopter has a monthly income of at least 30,000 THB for 2 consecutive years with proof of taxation.
  2. Parents requesting to patronize a Thai-national child:
    1. Is a full-blood child.
    2. Parents (mother or father) must be at least 50 years during the application time.
    3. Adopter has a monthly income of at least 30,000 THB for 2 consecutive years with proof of taxation.

Humanitarian Purposes (Parents Patronizing a Thai Permanent Resident Child)

There are 2 options:

  1. Parents patronizing a Thai permanent resident child are required to consider the following:
    1. The child must be blood-related.
    2. Is unmarried.
    3. Is 20 years old and meets the following qualification:
      1. If the child is 20 years or older by the date of application, the parents must present proof of adoption. For example, evidence of ongoing undergraduate studies before the age of 20 or a medical certificate indicating the inability to take care by oneself issued by the hospital.
  2. Parents requesting to patronize a Thai-permanent-residency child must meet these conditions:
    1. The child is a full-blooded child.
    2. Parents (mother or father) must be at least 50 years until the date of application.

Global Talented Expert

A person who is talented in specializing in a certain field of study or work that can prosper Thailand, can consider this option in obtaining a Thai permanent residency should they meet the following conditions:

  1. Hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree and have a special ability beneficial to the nation.
  2. The competent official is a sponsor that can issue supporting evidence.
  3. Possess a letter of employment of a particular job with the working period of at least three years until the date of application.

Case-by-Case Circumstances

The following are special circumstances where Thai permanent residency can be granted to certain individuals:

  1. A person is a contributor to Thailand or the Thai government or is recognized by a reputed institution in conceiving a beneficial work to Thailand or working for an agency.
  2. Possess a certificate issued by one of the following public bodies including:
    1. The governmental department.
    2. The Bangkok or provincial governor.
    3. A civil service officer ranked as a c10 level or above.
    4. Police officer ranked as a Police General.
    5. Military officer ranked as a General, Admiral, or Air Chief Marshal.
    6. A minister.
    7. President of the House of Representatives.
    8. Vice President of the House of Representatives.
    9. Senate President.
    10. Senate Vice President.
    11. Committee of Independent Organizations in accordance with constitutional law.
  3. Other qualified criteria up to the discretion of the Immigration Committee.
