Public Transportation in Thailand

Taking the public transportation is an essential part of a working expatriate’s daily life in Thailand. Therefore, the following tips are very helpful especially to those expatriates who have yet to start their first day at work in Bangkok:

Opt for either the Bangkok Skytrain (BTS) or the Bangkok MRT. These public transport systems are the most efficient and fastest means to reach offices in Bangkok. Such also allow less hassle and traffic-free journeys especially to those already running late. The fares are likewise cheaper compared to those charged by metered taxis.

In cases where the distance of an expatriate’s apartment is far from the nearest BTS or MRT station, it is advisable for him/her to arrange a taxi pool with friends or fellow work colleagues who are knowledgeable on shortcut directions to the nearest station. This taxi pool allows them to get to their destinations at approximately half the time and likewise serves as a good cost-cutting measure.

Learn Thai words that are crucial in giving directions and in paying fares especially when riding a taxi. Below are a few Thai language translations:

 How much?--Taw rai
 Expensive--Peng
 Please turn right--Liawkwa
 Please turn left--Liawsai
 Go straight--Trongpai
 Stop here--Jodduay
 Stop there--Jodtheenan
 I want to go to--Phomjapai

In riding taxis, always choose metered ones.Taxi meters prevent drivers from taking advantage of expatriate passengers since these meters usually reflect real fare costs. Also, there are times when meter taxi drivers forego charging loose changes such as those ranging between 1 Baht-5 Baht.
