Applicants who successfully obtained visas to enter the United Kingdom under permanent categories are entitled to bring certain family members with them on a UK Family Member Visa. Applications for entry clearance have to be made through the British Embassy in Bangkok. In cases where the main applicant has obtained a work permit, the work permit has to be obtained first in the UK before entry-clearance applications can be made. In all other cases, applications by family members for entry-clearance may be made at the same time as the main applicant.

Eligibility

The applicant for a UK Family Member Visa must be:

  • The spouse of the main applicant.

  • The unmarried partner of the main application. Please see the section on unmarried partners.

  • A child under 18 of the main applicant accompanying your parents to the UK.

  • It is sometimes possible for a child to accompany one parent to the UK, but special rules apply and you are advised to contact us in this regard.

  • Children over 18 need to qualify independently under the Immigration rules for rights of residence in the UK. Exceptional applications for children over 18 to accompany parents as dependents may be possible in very restricted circumstances, for which advice is needed

The parents or sponsor must:

  • Be living in the UK legally, with no time limit on their stay, or they are applying at the same time as the applicant

  • Show proof that they can support you without help from public funds

  • Show proof that they have enough accommodation, which they own or live in, and where the applicant can live without access to public funds
